Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning alone.

As part of the Foundational Series, we introduce the use of online technologies to enhance face-to-face classes. This year, we are also introducing a series to explore strategies for using online applications to enhance learning. The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored with IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining workshops:

November 16 – Designing and Facilitating Meaningful Online Activities (Cari Maguire and Heather Ek)
January 18 – Digital Video and Audio Tools (Anita Fisher, Scott Krenz, and Nathan Lind)
February 15 – Web Access: Universal Online Design Principles (Hans Wiersma, Eric Strom, and CLASS resources)
March 14 – Online Assessment Techniques and Academic Integrity (Scott Krajewski and Emily Hoisington)

Please rsvp to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), so we can have an appropriate number of handouts for these sessions.
CTL and IT also offer passes for faculty to explore online technologies through workshops offered by Sloan-C (Sloan Consortium of Institutions and Organizations Committed to Quality Online Education). Those interested in participating in these courses (see http://sloanconsortium.org/2011workshops) can request a pass from Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu).

Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations

Augsburg College has a long history of building strong relationships with corporate, foundation and government funding agencies. These grant-seeking functions have been housed in different departments, which sometimes made it difficult for faculty and staff to know with whom they should speak regarding grant-seeking.

We are delighted to tell you that we have made some administrative changes that will simplify and strengthen the grant-seeking process for faculty and staff. Effective October 1, we combined the offices of sponsored programs, corporate and foundation relations, and government relations, creating the new Office of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations (CFGR) at Augsburg College. We are fortunate to have a seasoned and talented staff for the department, including Jay Benanav, Carol Forbes, and Laura Roller. The CFGR Office will be located in Oren Gateway Center Suite 106 and we expect this move will take place by mid-November.

The CFGR Office serves as a central contact point for Augsburg College and external funders. Faculty and administrators can contact the CFGR staff to consult about pursuing external funding from all sources to support research, curriculum development, outreach programs, student support services, special initiatives, and capital projects. Other benefits of this consolidation include:
• Centralized data and research on corporate, foundation and government donors and prospects, thereby providing a clearer picture of key funding relationships.
• Better coordination of donor and prospect management and stewardship across functions and departments.
• Enhanced collaboration, increased efficiency and greater synergy between personnel seeking grant support.
• Strengthened reporting and stewardship of donors, resulting in stronger long term funding relationships.

Contact information for the CFGR staff
Jay Benanav, Director of Government Relations 612.330.1752
Carol Forbes, Director of Sponsored Programs 612.330.1184
Laura Roller, Senior Director of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations 612.330.1720

We are excited by the opportunities that will come as a result of this new structure as this talented team begins its work together.

Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Auggies Give Back in a Big Way

Thank you to the 147 new bone marrow donor registry members that signed up with Be The Match last week! Our representative from Be The Match said that was the most donors she has ever had at any of her college recruitment sites. Many thanks also to Coach Bateman, Coach Deden and the many baseball players who helped the day of the donor drive.

This successful drive follows closely after the successful fall blood drive in which 127% of goal was achieved with blood donations enabling 151 lives to be saved.

This is what Augsburg is about. We truly give back to our community due to the commitment and passion from our students, faculty and staff. As an employee and now an Auggie mom I am so proud of this community and thankful to be a part of it.

If you have any questions about Be The Match or would like additional information on becoming a bone marrow donor, please contact Kristine Reed at kreed2@nmdp.org or call Dianne at the CCHP office at 612-330-1707.

Turkeypalooza! Help CK Make Thanksgiving Possible

It's that time of the year again, where families and friends come together to dine on pretty much the exact same thing. In the tradition of Thanksgiving, the Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College plans serve hundreds of turkey-centric meals to our neighbors in need during our 8th annual Turkeypalooza celebration.

As always, we look towards members of the campus community to donate the following ingredients:

Cash or check (lets us buy all the things that aren't donated)
Turkeys
Stuffing mix
Real and instant potatoes
Real and canned pumpkins
Frozen or canned green beans
Cream of mushroom soup
French fried onions

Can you or your office mates commit to collecting one or more of these ingredients? If so, please contact Elena at eveslage@augsburg.edu to let them know what you plan to contribute, and plan to bring them in on Monday 11/14 from 11-1 pm in the Christensen Center lobby (we will also be there Tuesday if you forget on Monday). Extra food items will be passed along to the Brian Coyle food shelf by the 21st so people can still make use of them on the 24th for Thanksgiving.

All the cooking shifts and deliveries will be filled by students and others through Students Today Leaders Forever and the Honor Society's Week of Kindness. Campus Kitchen thanks them dearly for making this all happen. Unfortunately, the Brian Coyle Community Center will not be hosting the Multicultural Dinner this year, and thus it is not in our schedule as it has been in years past.
