Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Escort Changes During Construction

Public Safety Escort Changes Effective During Riverside Avenue Construction:

Due to the construction on Riverside Avenue Public Safety will be making the following changes to escort locations and times of service. Public Safety will no longer give off campus escorts between the hours of 7 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 6 pm Monday through Friday due to the rush hour traffic. Public safety will also no longer give escorts to Wells Fargo Bank.

It is important that Public Safety be available for on campus emergencies and services. When taken off campus for escorts during these times, Public Safety is unable to respond to campus in a timely manner. Thank you for understanding these changes and planning accordingly.

As always, Public Safety will give emergency escorts to the Fairview- University Hospital regardless of time of day.

Crime Alert: Burglary in Science Hall

August 2nd 2011 Burglary Reported:

On the morning of August 2nd, it was reported that a laptop had been taken from an office in Science Hall. The office owner left the office at around 6:45 pm on August 1st and returned at around 7:45 am on August 2nd to find the laptop missing. The suite door had been locked, though the individual office had not. There are currently no suspects for this crime. If you have any information about this crime, please report to Public Safety Dispatch 612-330-1717 or Minneapolis Police 911.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

Always lock your office whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.

If you misplace or do not have a key, please call 1717 and ask us to come and lock the office. Please wait in the office until we arrive.

Do not prop open doors. If you see a door propped open, close the door and report it to DPS by calling 1717.

Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.

Keep your car keys on your person at all times.

Back up your data! Your files can easily be backed up to your network folder or a USB drive. Don't risk losing your notes, research and other work. If you have any questions about the best way to back up your data, talk to your LFC or to Student Computing.

Immediately report suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS.

General Announcements

Still Need A Class--Try Native Women and FIlm

Are you looking for a Fall Class. AIS 208/408: Native American Women and Film still has room--sign up this week!

Native American Women and Film offers the unique opportunity for students to engage with the rich world of Native American women in film. Beginning with issues of representation and a history of Hollywood's portrayal of Native American woman as princess figures, sexualized maidens, or squaws, we will put into conversation a variety of voices that talk back to or address mainstream stereotypes of Native American women. Throughout the semester, we will explore the political and social forces at work behind the American Indigenous Film movement, which is not only a response to mainstream film's portrayal of Native Americans but is also an active voicing of the extraordinary ranges in perspectives and views that inform Native American cultures. In the process we will expand our conceptualizations of Native American women and their important roles in society by examining a variety of cultural issues as they are presented through documentary and fiction films made by and about Native American women.

Goals: This course will help you develop your ability to read critically, think analytically, and convey your ideas clearly, in both oral and written exposition. This course cross-lists with Film Studies and Women's Studies, but everyone is welcome. The elements listed above encompass the following goals of the Women's Studies Program's curriculum: 1) to recognize, analyze, and evaluate women's contributions to knowledge, society, and culture; 2) to include a critical examination of social forces changing or having shaped the situation of women and examine how women have shaped their societies; and 3) to include analysis of women's responses to such systems as imperialism, colonialism, racism, and sexism.
