Call for Proposals - Symposium in Kigali, Rwanda


Go to Kigali, Rwanda to present your work, share your research, and generate knowledge at the SIT Symposium "Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging Past, Present, and Future" January 10 - 13, 2012. The objective is to explore together the meeting points of memory studies and of post conflict, peace building, and reconciliation studies, and generate knowledge about the pedagogy and ethics in teaching post-conflict in a study abroad setting.

If you desire to present, abstracts of your session are due June 1, 2011. In addition to the symposium, there will be a site visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial with focus on the pedagogy of teaching memory, peace building, reconciliation, and social justice.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence

This spring, CTL launched the first of three parts of a development series to address different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence. Over the summer, sessions will involve follow up conversations about topics covered in the spring and issues related to putting what you've learned into practice. The sessions are held monthly from 3:00-4:30 pm during the summer.

The schedule for Summer 2011 is:

On-Campus GRE Prep for the New GRE

GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Tuesdays from 5:30-8:00 PM for six weeks (May 31; June 7, 14, 21, 28; July 12, 19) in Kennedy room 303. The cost is only $75, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

Alums and non-Augsburg students are also welcome to register.

Korea TaLK Program - Apply Now



The Institute of International Education is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the Korean Ministry of Education, Science, & Technology in their efforts to promote international exchange and to bring more American students to Korea.

IIE will be assisting the Korean government in publicizing and recruiting for the "Teach and Learn in Korea" (TaLK) Program which is a study abroad opportunity that is open to both undergraduate students and recent college graduates.

The TaLK Program is supported by funds 300 TaLK Scholars each semester to teach conversational English in rural Korean elementary schools. The program provides a 1-month orientation for the TaLK Scholars in addition to round-trip airfare, a settling-in allowance, a monthly living stipend of approximately $1,300, health insurance and organized trips to historical locations in Korea.

Given the generous terms of the program this is a unique type of study abroad opportunity which can provide international experience for students with financial need who might not otherwise be able to go overseas.

Focused Conversation: Today in Science 123

TODAY, Thursday, May 19, 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m., Science 123

The Human Resources Leadership Committee has been tasked with rewriting the new Employee Handbook. The purpose of this focused conversation is to:
1. Discuss the process, and what will happen going forward.
2. Present two new policies to the campus which are new and in draft form:
a. "Progressive Discipline Policy"
b. "Grievance Policy/Procedure"

Campus community members will be able to access the drafts on the HR moodle site and hard copies will be available at the meeting.

On behalf of the Committee, we want to encourage you to attend one or both of the focused conversations, and provide feedback to any of the Committee members. The Committee will be meeting again as a group to discuss all feedback that we have received.

Scholarship for Study in Japan in 11-12 - Apply Now

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by Monday, June 13, 2011.

The Japan America Society of Minnesota (JASM) will award the Mondale Scholarship to Minnesota undergraduate students enrolled in Minnesota colleges and universities who want to broaden their knowledge of Japan through a combination of study and travel. JASM will offer up to $3,000 in scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year. The selection committee has the discretion to award up to three $1,000 scholarships or two $1,500 scholarships. The awards can be used for travel to or within Japan before, during, or after the student's specified term of study.

The application process consists of the completion and submission of the following items:

1. Application form
2. Official college/university transcript(s) from all institutions attended
3. Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher
4. Two letters of recommendation. These letters should come from a faculty member or a member of the applicant's community of residence who know the applicant well and who can attest to the applicant's desire to spend time studying and traveling in Japan.
5. An essay that addresses these questions: Why do you want to study and travel in Japan? What is your goal for this experience? How do you intend to use the scholarship dollars? The essay must be no longer than two double-spaced typewritten pages.
6. A copy of the letter of acceptance from the intended program of study in Japan.

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by Monday, June 13, 2011.

The selection committee will review all applications and select finalists for interviews. These interviews will be held in the JASM office during June and July. Applicants unable to participate in the interview process may be disqualified by the selection committee.

Department of Residence Life Summer Office Hours

Attention summer residents and other Augsburg community members:

Please note summer office hours for the Department of Residence Life. The Anderson Residence Life Office is closed for the summer. All operations occur out of the Urness/Mortensen Residence Life Office during the summer months.

Summer office hours are as follows:

Monday through Thursday - 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday - 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If you have any questions, please contact a professional staff member within the Department or call the Department of Residence Life's main office line at 612-330-1526.

Fall WEC/Grad Fall Registration

WEC/United/Grad Students (except PA & MBA):

Although summer registration began on Monday, 18 April, it will close briefly for undergraduate students on Sunday, 22 May, to allow for registration for Fall to be phased in by class rank, starting on Monday, 23 May 2011 at 08:30am. Fall web registration ends 8 September. AugNet registration opens each day below for the new class at 8:30 a.m. Class start dates are one day apart and will follow this schedule:

Monday, 23 May - Seniors and graduate students
Tuesday, 24 May - Juniors, non-degree & second degree seeking students
Wednesday, 25 May - Sophomores
Thursday, 26 May – Freshmen

Summer Session II registration will re-open for students on the day that their class is able to register (see above).

The last day for initial registration (must be registered for 1 course) for Minneapolis/United Fall Trimester is the last business day before the term begins: Thursday, 8 Sep 2011.

The last day to readmit to the Minneapolis/United Augsburg for Adult programs for Fall Trimester (and register for at least 1 course) is the last business day before the term begins: Thursday, 8 Sep 2011.

Students are encouraged to register early as course availability decreases greatly after the first two weeks of the registration period.

Students with a financial, payment plan paperwork, or immunization holds will be unable to register until the hold is cleared. Please contact the Enrollment Center at 612.330.1046 or email enroll@augsburg.edu for assistance.

The official list of Perspective and Skills, LAF Courses, and Senior Keystone courses is found on the Registrar web page: http://www.augsburg.edu/registrar/.. There is also a link on this page, Registration Information - Rochester, that consolidates many useful items used in registration.

AugNet Records and Registration is the preferred method of registration (both adding and dropping courses) but registration forms are available on the Registrar's website at http://www.augsburg.edu/registrar/.

For Summer Sessions: Students may take up to 2.0 credits in each 5-week summer session or 7-week online summer session. However, course loads for terms that overlap may be increased based on a student’s cumulative GPA (Cum GPA). Specifically, the combined credit load for Day/WEC/Rochester/United/Grad students between Spring Trimester, Summer Session I, and Summer Online I is limited to 2.0 credits but may be increased to 3.0 credits if the Cum GPA is 3.00 or better. Additionally, the combined load between Summer Session II and Summer Online II is limited to 2.0 credits at any one time, but may be increased to 3.0 credits if the Cum GPA is 3.00 or better. Students desiring to exceed these limits must petition the Student Standing Committee prior to registration. Unless otherwise indicated, all courses carry a value of 1.0 course credit. One Augsburg course credit is equivalent to four semester credits or six quarter credit.

International Symposium in Music and Medicine

Learn how to request help, get your print and mail job out on time and within budget. Discussion will cover time lines, postage and mailing costs, and mailing options. Spring Social

The Office of the President and Staff Senate invite you to join us at a Spring Social in the Quad for staff and faculty. The gathering will be held on Monday, May 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.

This event will replace the Staff Senate Summer Picnic in an effort to make the celebration more special. It is our hope that this social hour will become an annual end-of-year celebration much like the holiday party in December. Please join us to celebrate this new season.
