Call for Proposals – Symposium in Kigali, Rwanda

Go to Kigali, Rwanda to present your work, share your research, and generate knowledge at the SIT Symposium "Conflict, Memory, and Reconciliation: Bridging Past, Present, and Future" January 10 - 13, 2012. The objective is to explore together the meeting points of memory studies and of post conflict, peace building, and reconciliation studies, and generate knowledge about the pedagogy and ethics in teaching post-conflict in a study abroad setting.

If you desire to present, abstracts of your session are due June 1, 2011. In addition to the symposium, there will be a site visit to Kigali Genocide Memorial with focus on the pedagogy of teaching memory, peace building, reconciliation, and social justice.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence

This spring, CTL launched the first of three parts of a development series to address different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence. Over the summer, sessions will involve follow up conversations about topics covered in the spring and issues related to putting what you've learned into practice. The sessions are held monthly from 3:00-4:30 pm during the summer.

Monday, May 23rd
Assessment Workshop on Graduation Skills

Section 1: Quantitative Reasoning Assessment of Student Learning
Time: 9am-1pm (lunch served at noon)
Where: Kennedy 303/305
Audience: Faculty who teach QF, QA, or QFA courses
What to bring: Quantitative reasoning data from 2010/2011 (if available) or your questions and ideas about assessing this skill

Section 2: Critical Thinking and Writing Assessment of Student Learning
Time: 12pm-4pm (lunch served at noon)
Where: Kennedy 303/305
Audience: Faculty who will be teaching courses in which critical thinking and writing will be assessed during the 2011/2012 academic year.
What to bring: A syllabus for assessment planning and questions/ideas about assessing this skill next year

What to bring: Student learning assessment data from 2010/2011 (if available) or your questions and ideas about what to assess in 2011/2012. This will be a "working" workshop. Departments/programs will have time to work on compiling assessment data from 2010/2011 and to develop assessment plans for 2011/2012.

Graduation Skills Workshops

Thursday, May 19, OGC 114

All faculty who teach a course designed to develop one of the graduation skills – critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, writing, or speaking – are expected to participate in a workshop for each of the skills they are responsible for teaching. These workshops clarify the graduation requirement, and discuss strategies for teaching the skill, constructing activities and assignments to develop the skill, and providing assessments and feedback on skill development. This year's remaining graduation skills workshops are scheduled as follows:

8:30-10:00 am - Critical Thinking (Bruce Reichenbach and Mary Lowe)
10:30-12:00 am - Quantitative Reasoning (John Zobitz and Stacy Freiheit)

Medieval MN Summer Camp Receives $10,000 Grant

The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, as part of Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, has awarded a $10,000 grant to Medieval Minnesota, the medieval summer camp based in Augsburg's Medieval Studies Program. This grant recognizes Medieval Minnesota's record for providing "high-quality, age-appropriate arts education for Minnesotans of all ages to develop knowledge, skills, and understanding of the arts ... to cultivate creativity and deepen knowledge of and/or through the arts for children, youth, and adults by engaging people in extended arts experiences and activities with clearly articulated learning objectives."

Focused Conversation: Major Updates on Employee Handbook

The Human Resources Leadership Committee has been tasked with rewriting the new Employee Handbook. The purpose of this focused conversation is to:
1. Discuss the process, and what will happen going forward.
2. Present two new policies to the campus which are new and in draft form:
a. "Progressive Discipline Policy"
b. "Grievance Policy/Procedure"

Campus community members will be able to access the drafts on the HR moodle site and hard copies will be available at the meetings:

Direct Mail Marketing Made Easier - Workshop

Printing and mailing can be confusing and complex. There are resources on campus to help you navigate these tricky waters. Learn how to request help, get your print and mail job out on time and within budget. Discussion will cover time lines, postage and mailing costs, and mailing options. Bring your questions to this informal workshop, and any specific examples, if you wish. Thursday, May 19, 2 PM, Marshall Room, Christensen Center. Refreshments will be served.

Spring Social--Next Monday

The Office of the President and Staff Senate invite you to join us at a Spring Social in the Quad for staff and faculty. The gathering will be held on Monday, May 23, from 3 to 5 p.m.

This event will replace the Staff Senate Summer Picnic in an effort to make the celebration more special. It is our hope that this social hour will become an annual end-of-year celebration much like the holiday party in December. Please join us to celebrate this new season.
