Update on Study Abroad in Egypt

Given recent events in Egypt, the Office of International Programs staff, including Augsburg Abroad, wanted to update the campus community on our plans for the faculty-led program set to depart for Egypt in May (led by Professors Phil Adamo and Mohamed Sallam). Our office has been monitoring the situation carefully and wants to assure everyone that the safety and security of students and faculty studying abroad is our office’s highest priority.

The U.S. State Department issued a Travel Warning on January 31, 2011, to provide citizens with information on the changing security situation in Egypt. They recommend that U.S. citizens avoid travel to Egypt due to ongoing political and social unrest, and suggest that U.S. citizens currently in Egypt consider leaving as soon as they can safely do so. See the full text of the Travel Warning at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5263.html

The situation in Egypt is changing on a daily, even hourly basis and there is no way to determine how long demonstrations will go on or what the result will be. Since the faculty-led group isn't set to depart for Egypt for several months, we continue to monitor State Department recommendations in relationship to our program plans.

If the Travel Warming remains in place on March 1, the program will be canceled. If the Travel Warning has been lifted by that date, staff in our office will continue to monitor the situation through our local travel provider, other local sources, international media, and the US State Department. We will not hesitate to cancel or change part or the entire program, if needed, to secure the safety and security of students and faculty.

In the event that our office cancels the program, students who have applied and been accepted will not be held financially responsible for any cancellation costs, and will be offered the opportunity to participate in other Augsburg summer study abroad programs. Any students interested in exploring other study abroad options should contact the Augsburg Abroad office at abroad@augsburg.edu .

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

A complete job description, job requirements, additional compensation and application information are available in the TRiO/SSS Office (SCI 152) and online through Human Resources: www.augsburg.edu/hr

The application deadline is Monday, February 21, 2011 so apply now!

Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Copies of the nomination form are available at:
web.augsburg.edu/staffsenate/nomination.doc

Nominators and nominees should plan to be present at the Staff Appreciation gathering on Thursday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m. in East Commons, Christensen Center where the Outstanding Staff Award recipients will be announced. We will also honor those who celebrated their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th anniversaries in 2010.

Please return all nomination forms and letters of recommendation to Kevin Cheatham at CB 47 or SCI 152 by Friday, February 18 at 4 p.m. Thanks.

Huge Wrestling Weekend Starts TONIGHT

This weekend is a huge one for Augsburg's 11-time national champion wrestling program, with two major dual meets at Si Melby Hall.

TONIGHT (Friday 2/4) at 7:30 p.m., the No. 3-ranked Auggies host No. 1-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) in the annual "Battle of the Burgs." Since 1995, the Division III national title has been the exclusive domain of the two Lutheran college rivals, and this battle is always a great one.

Tonight will also feature two special events. The Auggies are celebrating the "Reunion of Ones," as the 1961 MIAC championship team, 1991 NCAA Division III national championship team and the 2001 NCAA Division III national championship team will be honored at intermission of the dual meet. The reunion will begin at 5 p.m. in the Kennedy Center.

Also, there will be a high school match prior to the Augsburg-Wartburg dual tonight, as Albert Lea and Coon Rapids face off at Si Melby Hall, starting at 5 p.m.

On SUNDAY (2/6) at 2 p.m., Augsburg will host No. 2-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse in a dual at Si Melby Hall. Augsburg is aiming to avenge an earlier loss to the Eagles this season at the NWCA Division III National Duals. This will be the ninth all-time meeting between Augsburg and UW-La Crosse, with the Auggies holding a 6-2 advantage.

Both tonight's and Sunday's dual meets will be webcast live on Augsburg's athletic website. Go to http://athletics.augsburg.edu/ and click on the "Auggies Live" link to access the webcast and live statistics.
