Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Thursday, October 28, 12:00-1:00, Century Room

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine what are our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. They are scheduled as follows:

October 28, 2010 – Why NSSE Matters at Augsburg (Barbara Farley)
November 23, 2010 – Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010 – Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011 – Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)
March 24, 2011 – Enriching Educational Experiences (Lori Brandt Hale)
April 21, 2011 – Supportive Campus Environment (Ann Garvey)

Light refreshments will be served.

Disability Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Everybody's fighting some kind of stereotype, and people with disabilities are no exception. The difference is that many of the barriers people with disabilities face begin with people's attitudes. And attitudes are often rooted in misinformation and misunderstandings about what it's like to live with a disability.

Saugestad Rink Dedication Set for Saturday

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/10/11/mhoc101110.aspx?path=mhockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College will honor Ed Saugestad '59, the coach who built the school's men's hockey program to national prominence, by naming the main competition rink at the Augsburg Ice Arena in his honor during a ceremony this Saturday.

As part of the school's Homecoming weekend, Augsburg will rename the main rink at the Augsburg Ice Arena as Ed Saugestad Rink. The ceremony will begin on Saturday at 6 p.m., with a reception in the Si Melby Hall gymnasium. After a program in the gymnasium, the event will move to the Augsburg Ice Arena, where the formal dedication will take place. A set of three large murals, illustrating Saugestad's career, the Augsburg men's hockey program's history and the Augsburg women's hockey program's history, will be unveiled.

A 1959 Augsburg alumnus, Saugestad began his coaching career during his senior year, 1958, and coached the Auggies until 1996, compiling a 503-354-21 record. His Auggies won Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles six straight years (1977-82), qualified for national tournament play 10 times and won the NAIA national championship in 1978, 1981 and 1982. He coached 22 All-Americans during his Augsburg career. Saugestad was named NAIA National Coach of the Year three times and MIAC Coach of the Year six times.

Saugestad was awarded the American Hockey Coaches Association's John MacInnes Award in 2002 to honor his contributions in the growth of amateur hockey in the United States, and was named as the Hobey Baker Legends of Hockey honoree in 2007. The MIAC christened its playoff championship trophy as the Ed Saugestad Trophy in 1998. He was inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

In addition to his hockey coaching duties, Saugestad also served on the Augsburg football coaching staff from 1959-84, including two years (1970-71) as head coach. Now recognized as a Faculty Emeriti, Saugestad taught in the Health and Physical Education department throughout his career, and served as the college's men's athletic director from 1981-87. The Augsburg athletic department has named its academic awards for male student-athletes as the Ed Saugestad Academic Award.

Clauson Lange Named Women's Swimming Coach

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/10/11/swim101110.aspx?path=wswim

MINNEAPOLIS -- Kasi Clauson Lange, a holder of 24 Augsburg College women's swimming school records, will be returning to her alma mater as the team's new head coach, it was announced on Monday.

A 2008 Augsburg alumnae, Clauson Lange will take over the program after Colleen Morgan recently resigned to pursue other opportunities. Morgan coached the Auggies during the 2009-10 season.

"I'm really excited to come back to Augsburg and coach the swimming and diving team," Clauson Lange said. "I enjoyed my experience as a student-athlete and look forward to helping other student-athletes do the same. I'm excited to dream for the program and work towards that dream."

In four seasons (2003-05, 2006-08) as an Auggie swimmer, Clauson Lange established herself as the top swimmer in the history of the program, setting 17 individual event school records, while being a part of seven relay school records. In her first season, she had two top-16 finishes in B-finals at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, a feat she repeated the following year. She was a three-year captain for the Auggies, and the first swimmer to compete all four years for the program. The Augsburg women's swimming program began in her first season, 2003-04.

Clauson Lange received her bachelor's degree in English and women's studies from Augsburg in 2008. She most recently worked as a sales representative for Elsmore Aquatic, a swimming equipment and swimwear firm. A native of Kansas, Okla., Clauson Lange and her husband David Lange, also a 2008 Augsburg alumnus, have a daughter, Rubi.

Augsburg's women's swimming season begins on Oct. 23, hosting the Augsburg Pentathlon at the Butler Center pool at St. Catherine University.
