Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Thursday, October 28, 12:00-1:00, Century Room

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine what are our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. They are scheduled as follows:

October 28, 2010 – Why NSSE Matters at Augsburg (Barbara Farley)
November 18, 2010 – Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010 – Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011 – Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)
March 24, 2011 – Enriching Educational Experiences (Lori Brandt Hale)
April 21, 2011 – Supportive Campus Environment (Ann Garvey)

Light refreshments will be served.

Batalden Program Conversation and Update--TODAY

Join Ruth Enestvedt and Joe Underhill for an informal discussion of the work of the Batalden Program as part of our regular "First Wednesday Gathering" today. Ruth has served as the Batalden Faculty Scholar for the past two years and will give an overview of the work she did and Joe will be serving for the next two. Grab some food as part of the Community Lunch and join us in the Cedar Room from 11-12.

The work of the Batalden program this year will involve collaborative efforts in experiential education focused on projects that fall under the broad category of applied ethics. Students, staff, faculty, and community groups are invited to join in discussion and implementation of projects that promote peace and justice, reduce our over-all ecological footprint and strengthen our ties with local community groups. Students would research clean energy, water management, community-building, fair trade, alternative transportation, and peace and justice initiatives. Funds are available to support this work in various ways, including student research assistantships. Contact Prof. Underhill if you have other questions or ideas for projects at underhill@augsburg.edu.

Designing Meaningful Learning Experiences

Monday, October 11, 7:30-9:00 am, Oren Gateway 100

The second session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning will explore how to design meaningful learning experiences. This series is designed to address the basic needs faced by anyone who designs learning for our students and is looking for new ways to have a more significant impact. Bring a course syllabus or program outline to get the most out of this workshop. Using L. Dee Fink's integrated approach to design, we will explore the 5 critical questions involved in design, provide examples, and give you an opportunity to reexamine your course or program and apply key principles to improve its design. We will also examine Fink's model of significant learning experiences which can help you discover ways to make the activities you use more impactful or create new ones that facilitate deeper learning. All faculty and staff are welcome to participate. Coffee and pastries will be served. Thanks to all of you who attended the opening session; we hope to see you again.

Facilitators: Stu Anderson, Physics, and Velma Lashbrook, MAL.

General Announcements

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Congress has designated each October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month This effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month." www.dol.gov/odep
About 54 million Americans -- approximately 1 in 5 -- report that they have some kind of disability and 26 million of them -- 1 in 10 -- say they have a severe disability. More than half the Americans with a severe disability were between ages 22 and 64.

Auditions for The Living Newspaper Project

Winter Main Stage Play Auditions
Tjornhom-Nelson Theater, Foss Center

Monday, October 18, 3:30 – 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 19, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.

All Augsburg students are welcome to audition for The Living Newspaper Project. There are many ways for you to get involved — through performance, writing, music, research, and community outreach.

Auditions and participation are not limited only to acting! If you are chosen as part of the ensemble, you may decide to perform onstage and/or contribute to the production in other ways. The ensemble members will determine the topic of the performance and create the script themselves!

Here are the steps you'll need to take to get involved:

1. Sign up for an audition time on the sheet posted on the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater door in the atrium of the Foss Center.

2. Go to the front desk of the Theater Arts Department (shared with Campus Ministry) in Foss Center OR the Theater Arts Department public folder on Augnet, where you will find a series of articles.

3. Choose one article and carefully prepare a 2-3 minute dramatic response or creative representation of it. (You may choose more than one article if you find a thematic link between them.) You could write a scene, perform an original monologue, create a movement piece, compose music, craft the words of the article into a poem, make a sound collage—the options are endless. Just be sure that you present or perform your work in no more than 3 minutes.

Callbacks will be held Wednesday, October 20 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
A cast meeting will be held Thursday, October 21 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Formal rehearsals will begin November 15, and performances will be February 4-13, 2011.

If you have any questions, please email the director Sarah Myers at myerss@augsburg.edu.

More on The Living Newspaper Project

Inspired by the original Living Newspapers of the Federal Theater Project in the 1930s, this student-devised performance will use a range of nonfiction sources to explore a current social issue. Ensemble members will gather interviews, articles, and multimedia – and generate their own writing — to create and stage a totally unique piece of socially conscious theatre.

Book Orders Due Next Friday, October 15

Effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) will require Augsburg to inform students about how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) Submitting your book orders promptly will help ensure our compliance to HEOA.
SUBMITTING TEXTBOOK REQUESTS
During registration, students must be able to access course information for fall. Registration begins in November, so it is imperative that we receive your Spring/Winter textbook adoption as soon as possible. Book request will be due in the store October 15th. We'll take your requests any way you want to deliver them! Choose the process that works best for you:
• Call 612-359-6492.
• E-mail sm592@bncollege.com or forgey@augsburg.edu
• Use our online system at www.augsburg.bncollege.com (click on the Faculty tab).
ONLINE REQUEST SYSTEM
This easy-to-use system gives you access to valuable information and timesaving features. You can learn what books were used over the past two years and select previously used textbooks just by checking a box, or you can enter information about a new book you want to use. You can also request additional supplies and materials needed for your course.
How to submit online requests through the bookstore website.
• Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com
• Click on the Faculty tab at the top of the page.
• Log in or register if you haven't already.
• Follow Steps 1 through 5…..and you're done!
• After you complete this process, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your textbook request was received.
WHY THE EARLY REQUESTS?
Faculty members are often surprised how early we begin asking for textbook requests for the coming term. We need to know what textbooks you plan to use for a number of reasons:
• To manage publisher or shipping delays that may arise. If we know what textbooks you want to use early on, you'll have time to review alternatives if your preferred titles aren't available.
• To get textbooks in the students' hands for the first day of class and to help them be prepared. By working together, we can make sure not a moment of instructional time is lost.
• To help save our students money! Early requests help us secure used copies of textbooks. Used textbooks offer students a lower-priced alternative—typically 25% less than a new textbook.
FACULTY CENTER NETWORK (FCN)
Are you considering a new book for the coming term? The FCN makes textbook selection faster and easier. This free online resource provides you with the information and tools you need to quickly research, select, and request your textbooks. You can view lists of other titles published in your discipline using various search and sort criteria, see how frequently and at which schools different textbooks are being used, read peer reviews, and preview textbooks.

Once you've identified which textbooks you want to learn more about, you can examine each book's cover and table of contents. Some textbooks have excerpts and summaries. The FCN also contains a link that you can use to request desk copies from publishers.
Ready to get started? Go to www.augsburg.bncollege.com and click on the Faculty tab. The Faculty Center Network access is located at the bottom of the Faculty page.
Bookstore Contact Info: Phone 612.359.6492

Islamist Feminism

Please join our "Foundations in Women's Studies" class for Dr. Smadar Lavie's discussion of "Islamist Feminism" on Monday, Oct. 11, 11-12, in the East Commons.

Lavie will explain the feminist failure to address religion due to religion's embeddedness in the patriarchal order. She will then review the history of Islamist feminism in Egypt, and its relationship with the forces of post-cold-war globalization and restructuring on the one hand, and with the historically secular feminist movement of Egypt, on the other. She will then explain the interplay between patriarchy, spirituality and desire in non-liberal societies.
