Dean's Summer Scholarship 2010

Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants
Summer, 2010

Purpose

Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility

Three $4,000 Augsburg Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2010. All tenure-track faculty who are in at least their second year of their tenure-track contract are eligible to apply.

Faculty who receive a Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Application Process

Please use the Research Application form that is available at the CTL website www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu in the Center for Teaching and Learning no later than March 12, 2010. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2009 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2011.

Applications are evaluated by the Faculty Development Committee, recommendations are forwarded to the Dean, and awards are announced in early April.

Come, Be Refreshed and Renewed

Mark your calendar for the spring retreat: "Remembering and Renewal" to be held at the Mount Olivet Retreat Center, 25 miles south of the Twin Cities. Come for the day (9-4) on May 12th, or stay overnight until noon on May 13th.

We will use spring themes to examine how we and our students can lead lives of commitment in a complex world. Selected readings, poems, video, music and nature will serve as catalysts helping us to slow down, to hear ourselves, and to have significant conversations with others. Join us for thoughtful conversation, generative questions, and a wonderful opportunity to get to know your colleagues.

If you need further information contact Ron Petrich 330-1593 or petrich@augsburg.edu; to sign up RSVP to Bev Stratton 330-1063 or stratton@augsburg.edu

Spanish Conversation and ETA in Spain

Is it time that you broadened your perspective of the world? Are you interested in the EU country of Spain? Come spend 25 mins. learning something that many of us don't know about this sun-drenched country: one of it's northern regions is home to a Basque terrorist group. Have you ever heard of ETA? This small, clandestine terrorist group rarely makes the headlines in the U.S. Come and learn about how terrorism affects Spain. Learn the historical context and the everyday outcomes of the work of ETA. Bietan jarrai. Alicia Pickens of Res. Life, who spent 2 months researching ETA in Spain, will speak this Thurs., 3/11, from 12:05-12:30 p.m.in the Augsburg Rm., 2nd fl. Christensen. Alicia will speak in both English and Spanish.

Our Spanish conversation group will meet beforehand, from 11:00-12:05, when we chat in Spanish about a wide variety of topics. Remember: the setting is very relaxed and you don't need to speak Spanish well to join us. All language levels are welcome - we promise there won't be any grammar lessons! Drop in for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Bring your lunch if you wish. If you have any questions, contact Emiliano Chagil, ext. 1309; Anita Fisher, ext. 1082 or Kate Reinhardt, ext. 1081. We hope to see you there!"

Students: every session you attend enters your name into a drawing for a movie or a CD in Spanish! The drawing will be held in early April. Also, attend 3 sessions and receive a great t-shirt!

FoodLess Food Drive

In March, a month of dwindling contributions to food shelves, Minnesota FoodShare engages in a statewide effort to boost dwindling supplies in over 260 shelves across the state, (known as the “March Campaign”) recruiting congregations, corporations schools and civic groups to aid local food shelves.

Last year, Augsburg got involved in this campaign to support Brian Coyle Community Center’s Food Shelf in the Cedar Riverside Neighborhood. Thanks to the generosity of the Augsburg Community, we managed to exceed our goal in contributions.

Once again March has come and Augsburg is moving to support the Brian Coyle Community Center through its unique FoodLess FoodDrive --and we need your help. The FoodLess FoodDrive is based on the notion that the food shelf can-- through bulk buying power and discounts-- purchase food worth about four times what is donated in cash! Giving money directly to the shelf makes sure they are able to stock their shelves with food.

Augsburg is hoping to raise $2000 in cash. Faculty and staff members will receive an envelope in their campus box this week. In addition, there will be tables set up and events throughout the month.

Matching funds for the drive have been committed from the Central Minneapolis Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Every $2 raised during the drive will be matched by $1 from Thrivent.

For more information, please contact Devon Dodge ( Augsburg student) at dodged@augsburg.edu.

AISA Presents Augsburg’s 2nd Traditional Powwow

Augsburg's Indigenous Student Association (AISA)'s
2nd Traditional Powwow
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Si Melby Gymnasium, Augsburg College Campus

Grand Entries (Start times): 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM
Community Feast: 5:00 PM
NO Admission fee - FREE!
There will be several vendors (craft/products and non-profit organizations) as well as a concession with Indian Tacos for sale by AISA.

Please note for those unfamiliar with a Powwow that a Grand Entry is the 'start' of a session where all the dancers come into the circle together. A session typically goes 3 hours and people are welcome to come and go throughout the day, however, if you have never experienced a grand entry I would suggest doing so. It is truly a cultural experience. We will take a break for a feast, in which all are invited, and the second session will start with the grand entry at 7:00 PM and will end around 9:30 PM. Within the sessions, there will be a variety of dances by category or

Augsburg hosted the first Powwow on campus last March, having close to 3,000 people throughout the day and hosting 14 drum groups and over 200 Native dancers. It was a huge success and we are looking forward to year #2.

Any questions or if you would like to get involved and/or co-sponsor this year's Powwow, please contact Jennifer Simon, Director of American Indian Student Services and Advisor to AISA at 612.330.1144 or simonj@augsburg.edu
