Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Parking Reminders

Now that spring term is underway, Public Safety would like to send a few reminders regarding parking for spring events:

Public Safety has an "Event Parking Request Form" online at http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/event_parking.html

Please use this form if you plan to have an event with 20 or more off campus guests coming to the college at anytime.
Communicating in advance and making plans for parking will ensure your guests have the best experience visiting our campus even before they arrive at your event.

Please allow a minimum of two weeks notice for us to make arrangements and accommodations that fit your event needs.

Those with smaller events (under 20) may request visitor permits from Public Safety dispatch, or electronic permits from parking@augsburg.edu.

Also, on Weekend College Weekends (friday evenings and Saturdays), visitor parking is extremely limited, $5 per vehicle in Lot L, and monitored closely by Public Safety staff.

For more information regarding parking on campus, please visit www.augsburg.edu/dps

As always, please e-mail parking@augsburg.edu with any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Travel to Germany and Poland this May

Just a few more spots available! (Deadline is Feb. 1)

May 8-22, 2010
Germany and Poland
HIS 195 / ENL 270

Theodor Adorno famously remarked that after Auschwitz there could be no more poetry. Since World War II, Eastern Europeans have endured loss, defeat, occupation, division, communism, resistance movements and, finally in 1989, freedom. This travel seminar explores a traumatic and fascinating period and traces Eastern Europeans' varied and shifting experiences and memories. How have people made sense of their suffering? In what ways have German, Polish and other Eastern European artists and writers captured these memories, even while these events are quickly passing out of living memory?

On our travels, we will visit some of most significant sites of the wartime and postwar period: Berlin, Leipzig, Wittenberg and Dresden in Germany; Gdansk, Warsaw, Kracow and Auschwitz / Birkenau in Poland. The itinerary includes visits with people who experienced these events, as well as to sites and memorials dedicated to the memory of World War II and the Holocaust; communism and life behind the Iron Curtain; and resistance and freedom movements in the 1960s and 1980s.

More information is available from the Augsburg Abroad Office, as well as from Prof. Jacqueline deVries <devries@augsburg.edu> and Bob Cowgill <cowgillr@augsburg.edu>

Check out the flyer: http://www.augsburg.edu/augsburgabroad/documents/Germany.pdf

Campus Hand Soap Dispensers

The manufacturer of our hand soap used in Augsburg restrooms has slightly changed the design of their soap bottle. This is causing the soap dispensers not to dispense hand soap even though the soap dispenser is stocked with soap. We are in the process of inspecting the hand soap dispensers and replacing/fixing the dispensers so that they will operate correctly. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please feel free to submit a work request if you notice hand soap dispensers not working correctly and we will get them repaired.

Augsburg's Indigenous Student Association (AISA)'s
2nd Traditional Powwow
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Si Melby Gymnasium, Augsburg College Campus

Grand Entries (Start times): 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM
Community Feast: 5:00 PM
NO Admission fee - FREE!
There will be several vendors (craft/products and non-profit organizations) as well as a concession with Indian Tacos for sale by AISA.

Please note for those unfamiliar with a Powwow that a Grand Entry is the 'start' of a session where all the dancers come into the circle together. A session typically goes 3 hours and people are welcome to come and go throughout the day, however, if you have never experienced a grand entry I would suggest doing so. It is truly a cultural experience. We will take a break for a feast, in which all are invited, and the second session will start with the grand entry at 7:00 PM and will end around 9:30 PM. Within the sessions, there will be a variety of dances by category or

Augsburg hosted the first Powwow on campus last March, having close to 3,000 people throughout the day and hosting 14 drum groups and over 200 Native dancers. It was a huge success and we are looking forward to year #2.

Any questions or if you would like to get involved and/or co-sponsor this year's Powwow, please contact Jennifer Simon, Director of American Indian Student Services and Advisor to AISA at 612.330.1144 or simonj@augsburg.edu

Massey Named D-III Wrestler of the Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/1/28/wres012810.aspx?path=wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College wrestler Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) was named the D3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week, it was announced on Thursday by D3wrestle.com, a website that covers NCAA Division III wrestling.

The defending NCAA Division III national champion at 197 pounds, Massey delivered two key victories enabling the No. 1-ranked Auggies to stay unbeaten in dual meets last week. In Augsburg's 18-12 win over top-ranked Division II squad Nebraska-Omaha last Friday, Massey clinched the win for the Auggies when he topped UNO's Jacob Marrs 6-2 in battle of the top-ranked 197-pound wrestlers in their respective divisions. On Sunday, Massey scored a 14-2, major-decision win to clinch the Auggies' 20-13 win at No. 6-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Massey, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Division III at 197, is now 16-0 on the season with six pins and three major decisions. In his two seasons as an Auggie, Massey is now 46-1. A two-time Minnesota high school state champion wrestler who competed at Division I Wisconsin in the 2003-04 season, he returned to collegiate wrestling in the 2008-09 campaign after four years away from the sport and dominated throughout the season, finishing 30-1 with 16 pins and three major decisions to claim the 44th individual national title in Augsburg wrestling history.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/30) at 9 a.m., splitting its squad for action at the St. John's North Country Open and the Grand View (Iowa) Open.

Pediatrician, Plumber, Electrician Recommendation?

Couple of big projects that I need recommendations on:

1) lovely and healthy Olivia just joined our family, and now we need pediatrician to keep an eye on her. We live in SE Minneapolis and looking for someone nearby, and our medical philosophy falls somewhere is the middle of the conventional-alternative spectrum.

2) the city is making us get retroactive permits for work that was done in our home before we bought it. We need a plumber, electrician, and possibly a general contractor. If you know of anyone that could help, or have ever gone through this process yourself, please share.
