Study Abroad in Scotland, May 18 to June 6

English professor Colin Irvine and History professor Phil Adamo are leading a study abroad trip to Scotland.

As budding historians and journalists on the go, we will travel through space (to Northern Scotland, throughout the country from castle to castle and many, many places in between) and through time (we will spend the first week in a 13th century monastery living the life of monks and learning what they have to teach. We will then move from there through the later Middle Ages and into the Renaissance and, finally, into the present era as we make our way south and west through the Highlands, and then east to the happening, contemporary city of Edinburgh, which will serve as our jumping-off point for other adventures during our third and final week. Along the way from place to place and from the past to the present, we will "cover the story," which is to say interview and experience all things Scotland and Scottish.

If you're interested, and you have not already done so, plan on setting up an initial interview with Andrea Dvorak in the Office of International Programs. She can tell you all the steps to take, including arranging for financial aid, in order to join us.

DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS FEBRUARY 1. We have limited space, so sign up soon.

Sign-up Today for Alternative Spring Break

Sign up for Augsburg's 2010 Alternative Spring Break, March 14-20: Sweet Homes in Alabama!

* $100 deposit holds your spot; Total trip cost is $300/person (includes travel, lodging, and most meals)

Sign-up in the Campus Ministry Office in Foss Center. Don't forget to bring your deposit.

Augsburg's group will serve in two areas:

1) Mobile, AL – through Habitat for Humanity, help some of the 400 families still living in transitional housing

2) Bayou La Batre – relational service through a local nonprofit for an area which relies heavily on the shrimp industry that has been affected by the hurricanes

Besides working in the community, there will be time for exploring the area. Possible highlights include: Dauphin Island, the shipyard that built the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean, the USS Alabama, eating fresh seafood, and visiting the home of "Forrest Gump."

This service-learning trip is a collaborative effort between Campus Ministry and the Bonner program. We are extremely excited for students to serve, learn, and share their gifts as they experience southern culture and create ways to connect their spring break service experiences back in the Augsburg community.

Save the Date

*SAVE THE DATE*
Augsburg's Indigenous Student Association (AISA)'s
2nd Traditional Powwow
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Si Melby Gymnasium, Augsburg College Campus

Grand Entries (Start times): 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Community Feast: 5:00 p.m.
NO Admission fee - FREE!
There will be several vendors (craft/products and non-profit organizations) as well as a concession with Indian Tacos for sale by AISA.

Please note for those unfamiliar with a Powwow that a Grand Entry is the 'start' of a session where all the dancers come into the circle together. A session typically goes 3 hours and people are welcome to come and go throughout the day, however, if you have never experienced a grand entry I would suggest doing so. It is truly a cultural experience. We will take a break for a feast, in which all are invited, and the second session will start with the grand entry at 7:00 p.m. and will end around 9:30 p.m. Within the sessions, there will be a variety of dances by category or

Augsburg hosted the first Powwow on campus last March, having close to 3,000 people throughout the day and hosting 14 drum groups and over 200 Native dancers. It was a huge success and we are looking forward to year #2.

Any questions or if you would like to get involved and/or co-sponsor this year's Powwow, please contact Jennifer Simon, Director of American Indian Student Services and Advisor to AISA at 612.330.1144 or simonj@augsburg.edu
