National Disability Employment Awareness Month

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.
Why is it called Asperger's Syndrome?

In 1944, an Austrian pediatrician named Hans Asperger observed four children in his practice who had difficulty integrating socially. Although their intelligence appeared normal, the children lacked nonverbal communication skills, failed to demonstrate empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy. Their way of speaking was either disjointed or overly formal, and their all-absorbing interest in a single topic dominated their conversations. Dr. Asperger called the condition "autistic psychopathy" and described it as a personality disorder primarily marked by social isolation.

Asperger's observations, published in German, were not widely known until 1981, when an English doctor named Lorna Wing published a series of case studies of children showing similar symptoms, which she called "Asperger's" Syndrome. Wing's writings were widely published and popularized. AS became a distinct disease and diagnosis in 1992, when it was included in the tenth published edition of the World Health Organization's diagnostic manual, International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), and in 1994 it was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), the American Psychiatric Association's diagnostic reference book.

It's a great day to say "Thanks!" to Augsburg's talented and dedicated photographer, Stephen Geffre. Auggie Men's Cross Country Ranked 7th in Region

Auggies ranked 7th in region, highest cross country ranking in school history
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2009/10/22/mcc102209.aspx?path=mcross

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's cross country team jumped to No. 7 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional rankings, reappearing in the top 10 after a one-week absence. The No. 7 ranking represents the highest cross country ranking in school history.

The Auggies finished as the top Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team out of eight that participated in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational on Saturday. Four of the Auggies top five runners set personal-best times on the day as the Auggies beat five teams previously ranked in the central region on their way to a 12th place finish. Leading the way for Augsburg was Brent Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn.), who cut 10 seconds off his personal-best time, as he set a school record 25:05.6 over the 8,000-meter course

Augsburg is one of five MIAC teams to be ranked in the region. St. Thomas is ranked No. 3, St. Olaf No. 5, St. John's No. 6, Augsburg No. 7 and Hamline No. 8.

The Auggies are idle this week and will return to action on Saturday (10/31) at the MIAC Championships held at the Como Park Golf Course.

Parking Advisory for Saturday Football Game

Parking advisory for Saturday football
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2009/10/21/fb102109.aspx?path=football

MINNEAPOLIS -- There is a parking advisory for fans wishing to attend this Saturday's (10/24) football game between Augsburg College and Gustavus Adolphus College at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Because it is an Augsburg For Adults (Weekend College) weekend, parking in ALL campus lots will be limited to Augsburg parking permit-holders on Saturday morning and afternoon (football game time), when classes are in session. NO FOOTBALL SPECTATOR PARKING WILL BE ALLOWED IN ANY AUGSBURG PARKING LOTS, including "Lot L," the large parking lot adjacent to Edor Nelson Field and Si Melby Hall, during that time. Lot L will be staffed and individuals without proper permits will be turned away. Lots will also be patrolled and non-permit-holders will be ticketed and/or towed at owner's expense.

Football game spectators are encouraged to park in the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview "Yellow Ramp". The entrance is located off of 23rd Avenue South, north of Riverside Avenue -- roughly a two-block walk to Edor Nelson Field. Parking will be available for $5 in the Yellow Ramp. There are no in-out privileges at the Fairview lots/ramps.

This $5 flat fee does not apply to the Red Ramp directly across Riverside Avenue from Augsburg. People who choose to park in the RED RAMP will be charged the REGULAR HOURLY RATE.

There is also on-street parking available on the streets around Murphy Square Park in the center of campus, as well as metered parking (enforced 24 hours a day) on Riverside Avenue.

For more information, contact the Augsburg athletic department at 612-330-1249 or the Augsburg Department of Public Safety at 612-330-1717.
