Lilly Faculty Development Grant – Apply by Oct. 19

Interested in learning from your colleagues who teach abroad? Curious how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching? Consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs. The purpose of the grant is to provide Augsburg faculty with an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. This can be done in the context of the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2009, by participating as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or by attending one of CGEs open programs led by individuals outside of Augsburg.

All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).

The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2010, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under "Lilly Funding Applications." The deadline to apply is October 19, 2009.

H1N1 Flu Preparation and Moodle

Faculty, have you thought about how you might keep students who are home sick engaged in your course? Have you thought about what you could do if you were home sick?

Moodle provides a means to stay connected and engage students in material and activities when they're not in your classroom.

The Academic LFCs are holding some short hands-on sessions to show 4 easy ways to connect and engage with students in moodle.

We'll cover the following topics

- using announcements and quickmail for communication
- creating a discussion forum
- posting your syllabus
- creating an online assignment

We have reserved a computer lab for 2 hour blocks. We will repeat the same 30 minute session four times during those blocks. Come when you are able. The session will have 15 minutes of demonstration followed by 15 minutes of hands-on time.

The first four sessions are:

Thursday 9/24, 3 - 5pm, SVE 201

Saturday (WEC) 9/26, 12 - 1pm, SVE 205

Monday 9/28, 9 - 11am, SVE 201

Wednesday 9/30, 3 - 5pm, SVE 201

Metropass Replacing Current Monthly Transit Pass

The monthly passes that have been sold in the previous years has been discontinued as of September 1, 2009 and has been replaced by the new Metropass Go-To Card. Order your Metropass card as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition to the new pass. There will be a 2 -3 week delay between the time the application is filled out and the time the new Metropass cards are delivered. Temporary pass cards will be available to allow applicants to continue bus use until their new passes arrive.

Fill out a Metropass application at the Enrollment service counters at Sverdrup 100 as soon as possible. All Augsburg employees working 20 hours per week or greater are eligible to participate in the Metropass program. Participants must sign up for the pass for a contract year that begins this September 1st and goes through August 31, 2010. The cost of the pass is $38.00 per month and it will be automatically deducted (pre-tax) from participants pay. Each participant has the opportunity to renew their card during the last month of the contract year. The Go-To cards are quicker to use on bus and trains and they also eliminate the need to go and purchase a monthly card at the service counter every month. The Go-To cards are good for light rail and buses, every day, all day including trips to some of the outlying suburbs.

Riders will have to provide additional cash to the driver for exceptionally long commutes outside the 7 county metro area. Travel by bus companies other than Metro Transit are not included in this program. Participants must agree to participate for the contract year, allow their I.D. picture to be used on the Go-To card and participants must return the card to Human Resources when their employment at the college ends. The cash value cards will still be on sale at the Enrollment counter with the same 50% discount as before. If you need more information please call Tom Ruffaner @ Ext. 1641.
