Academic Alerts

The Academic Alert system is up and running for the term. All Instructors, Day/Weekend, regular/adjunct, are encouraged to send an ALERT message to students when academic concerns are identified. Areas of concern might include, but are not limited to: lack of attendance, unprepared for class, poor performance on test and assignments, and or lack of participation. ALERT is not meant to replace face to face interaction with students. Each of you likely addresses academic issues with students as they arise. The ALERT message can however be used in addition to speaking with the student and/or when you have been unable to reach them via phone or e-mail. We hope that by reporting concerns early, students will have greater opportunity to correct the situation and salvage the course.

Now is the perfect time to submit an alert for students who have never attended your course(s). This gives us an opportunity to contact students and process withdrawal paperwork as needed. The Academic ALERT message is generated from the Augnet Records and Registration class roster. When logged into Augnet, click on Records and Registration. From Records and Registration, go into the appropriate class roster. You'll see a “Prepare Alert” link next to each student's name. Click on the link to access the alert message system. You can also access the alert system through Augnet Administrative Tasks.
Please contact me (andersos or X1777) if you have difficulty using the academic alert system.

What's an Academic Alert?

Have you checked your Augsburg e-mail account lately and found a message with the subject line “AA” and followed by your name? Perhaps you've avoided opening this message in fear of infecting your computer with a virus. Thankfully this isn't another virus. It also isn't a hoax. If you receive a message like this, you've gotten an Academic Alert from a concerned instructor. It's important that you open and respond to the issues identified by your instructor(s).

Academic Alert is an electronic tool used by faculty to make students aware of academic concerns. It is often used in conjunction with individual meetings. An Instructor will send an alert to an individual student when issues limiting academic success are identified. Some examples of reasons for sending an alert include: lack of class participation, poor performance on test or homework, and lack of attendance. The alert message is automatically sent to the student recipient, his or her faculty advisor, and members of the Academic Alert response team.

What should you do if you receive an alert? First and foremost, don't ignore it. You might think of the alert process as a warning call. It is meant to identify issues and give you a chance to resolve them. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away. Next, we encourage alert recipients to speak with the faculty member submitting the message. This helps to clarify issues and determine options. Finally, decide how you to resolve the issue(s). Some factors to consider when making your decision include: course requirements, financial aid, withdrawal deadlines and enrollment status. Advisors are available in many offices to assist you evaluating your options. Please feel free to contact any of the resources listed in the alert message for assistance in evaluating your options.

Bolivian Elections Observation Opportunity

It is an exciting moment for Bolivia. The continent's first indigenous president, Evo Morales, has led a sweeping reform movement which not only gives presidents the ability to run for a second term but also includes mandated indigenous representation in the government for the first time.

Please join the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College December 1-8, 2009 for a trip built around the 2009 presidential elections scheduled for Sunday, December 6. During this trip, you will look at political issues surrounding this election, including election mechanisms and the broader socio-political world that frames them. You will hear the party platforms, visit a variety of civic groups engaged in the process, get trained in the specifics of Bolivian electoral law, and observe the ballot-casting and counting on election day. You do not need to speak Spanish to participate. Translation will be provided for meetings.

Faculty, students and staff from Augsburg College will get a $100 discount on the cost of the seminar.

RE/Vision: Artist Panel Discussion

RE/Vision: Interact Responds to Wing Young Huie

Artist panel discussion this Thursday, September 17, noon in the Minneapolis Room, Christensen Center.

The Augsburg College Art Galleries is pleased to be spotlighting Interact Center's collaborative exhibit, RE/Vision: Interact Responds to Wing Young Huie in its Christensen Center Art Gallery. In this show, Interact Center artists respond to the award winning photography of Wing Young Huie. This mixed media collection of deeply personal individual pieces creates a connection to a larger community, which is at the core of Huie's work.

Wing Young Huie is a prominent local photographer who has received international attention for his many projects that document the changing cultural landscape of his home state Minnesota. His work shows ethnically diverse and economically challenged inner city neighborhoods and is profound, honest, deeply moving and often humorous and joyful.

To create RE/Vision, Huie personally presented Interact Center artists with an overview of his work and shared photographs from several of his projects, including Lake Street USA (675 photographs reflecting the people and places from a dozen disparate neighborhoods connected by a singular street) and Frogtown (a collection photographing residents of Frogtown, the largest Hmong community in Minnesota, on the street, in their homes, backyards, at barbecues, at play and during worship). For more information visit www.wingyounghuie.com.

Over 20 Interact Center artists then responded to his photos, influenced by both the work and the artist who created them. The result is a diverse and exciting collection, including paintings and drawings encompassing the same sense of kinship and compassion found in Huie's photography, which will be exhibited alongside the Interact artists' work.

Interact Center's Visual Arts Program Director/Curator, Welles Emerson designed this collaboration, knowing it would be interesting and meaningful for Interact Center artists to respond to Huie's inclusive images of communities not typically portrayed in fine art. “It was an exciting experience for our artists to interpret the work through their own artistic lens. Some chose to reinterpret entire photos, while others focused on a single element of an image."

Constitution Day

Thursday, September 19 in East Commons at Noon

"Constitution as Narrative: story-telling, civic engagement, and the art of politics"

Given By: Dr. Joseph Underhill, Associate Professor and Chair of Political Science

This talk will examine the constitution, and and other founding documents (charters, manifestos, declarations, vision statements) in the context of the question of political agency—how we conceive of and actualize notions of the human ability to meaningfully take action in relation to the political problems of the day. Conceiving of constitutions broadly, it will explore the idea of personal constitutions or narratives as avenues to political artfulness, not just at the level of formal government documents, but as personal manifesto. As part of Sustainability Awareness Month, this talk will focus on how we are responding to the issue of climate change and explore how personal narratives can play a role in that process.
