Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Lot D closed Sept 15, 5-9 pm

Lot D will be closed on the evening of Tuesday Sept 15th from 5 to 9pm. Please park in the other approved lots for your permit type during this time.

Vehicles parked in Lot D at 5pm on Sept 15 will be towed and fined a $50 tow fee.

Orange signs will be posted at the Lot entrance to remind you as the day approaches.

Where to park during Lot closure:
Resident permit parkers may park in lots B, E, F, and L
Commuter & PA Permit parkers may park in Street C, Lots K and L
Fac/Staff permit parkers may park in Lot G, J, and L
Wec/Grad Permit Parkers may park in Street C, Lots G, J, K, and L

Public Safety's City Cycling Seminar

Public Safety's City Cycling Seminar
Sept. 15 from 6-8:30 pm
Learn how to safely navigate the city on your bicycle! Hosted by Public Safety, this class is a confidence booster on city bicycling. Learn quick stops, quick turns, and lane positioning. Bicycle and Helmet are required. Class will be held in Parking Lot D from 6-8:30 pm. Door prizes such as U-Locks will be given out to those who fully attend the class. Class size is limited. "An electric bassist with over 25 years with experience in every conceivable setting, Christian is currently writing a book / multi-media manual on the history, performance practice, technique and repertoire of the electric bass in non-popular music genres. The work promises to be the one stop source for composers and performers who wish to incorporate the many timbres of this remarkable instrument.

K. Christian McGuire is a recognized early music scholar for his work on the liturgical chant of Hildegard von Bingen. He is a Saint Paul based instructor, composer, author, carpenter, electric bassist and musicologist. He holds a Master of Arts in Musicology from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts (1992) double major in Philosophy & Classics from Luther College in Decorah, IA"

He has served as author, musicologist, webmaster for the Minnesota High School Music Listening Contest since 2004 http://www.musiclisteningcontest.com
He developed the NASM approved Music History sequence for the McNally-Smith College of Music and currently teaches Music History / Theory and contemporary ensembles and electric bass at Augsburg College."

MUE 129 - Jazz / Rock / Improv Ensembles

Rock Band and Guitar Hero, move over. Play for REAL by registering for an Augsburg Jazz / Rock / Improv Ensemble. MUE 129A or MUE129B.

These workshop courses are designed to help:
* Play with others in a live setting
* Make musical arrangements of preexisting music
* Compose your own music in a band environment
* develop methods of Constructive Feedback
* Hone improvisational skills

We can use players of ANY instrumentation. It doesn't matter if you can play guitar, drums sax or only play nose flute, viola, banjo or bagpipes. We will take you.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS AVAILABLE NOW FOR FEBRUARY 2010 CONFERENCE ON "ASSESSMENT FOR THE CHANGING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT"
Session proposals are due September 18, 2009 Assessment of student learning and educational programs is more critical than ever now, as institutions scrutinize more closely the return from ever more limited resources. What’s more, assessment today has to take into account learning and working environments characterized by accelerating change. The primary goals of this conference are, first, to explore the implications of changes in the learning environment for how colleges and universities frame their approaches to student assessment, and second, what new opportunities exist in our rapidly changing working environment to strengthen assessment practices and make them more efficient and productive. We invite proposals for concurrent sessions that address the conference theme by disseminating and modeling effective practice or promoting stimulating dialogue, inquiry, and problem-solving on this theme.

GRE Prep: Register Now

Going to graduate school by the Fall of 2010 or 2011? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this fall on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Mondays 6-9 PM for six weeks (Sept, 14, 21, 28, Oct 5, 12, 19) in Sverdrup 2. The cost is only $40, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review who charge over $1,000.

Alums, staff, and non-Augsburg students are also welcome to register.

Student Leaders Wanted

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity has been awarded a State Farm Youth United Urban Grant for the 2009–2010 school year. Youth United (YU) is a program of Habitat for Humanity International run by youth and for youth ages 5 to 25. It brings young people together from all walks of life to play active roles in transforming their communities. Youth United mobilizes young people to sponsor and build a house with their local Habitat affiliate.

This fall, we will recruit youth from the Twin Cities Metro area to fill the leadership roles on our YU Steering Committee. We are looking for young leaders who are motivated to help us shape and build our new program. For more information, please visit http://www.tchabitat.org//youthunited.

Benefit Concert for ELCA World Hunger This Sunday

"Jesus Justice Jazz: The Tour" will be making a stop at Augsburg on Sunday September 13th from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. in Hoverston Chapel. Live Webcasts of Auggie Sporting Events

Augsburg College will be expanding its webcast offerings of athletic events, with video webcasts for numerous sporting events in addition to its current audio offerings.

More than 70 Augsburg events in football, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's hockey will be webcast through Augsburg's broadcast partner, T.J. Broadcast Services (Tom Witschen). In addition, dozens of events in men's and women's soccer, wrestling, baseball and softball will be webcast through the efforts of Augsburg students and staff.

Many of the home events will also feature live video webcasts, a first for Augsburg's athletic department. So if you can't make it to the games, you can cheer on the Auggies on your computer.

To access the webcasts, go online to Augsburg's new athletic website -- http://athletics.augsburg.edu/ -- and click on the "Live Stats and Webcasts" logo at the bottom of the page. A full webcast schedule will be available, along with archives of past events.
