Cass Dalglish Reception and Book Signing

Please join us for a reading and celebration of Cass Dalglish’s new book, Humming the Blues, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 3-4:30 p.m. in the Augsburg College Bookstore. All are welcome!

“And when you squat with your weaving twisting and untwisting the threads of life, you harvest spirit, you reap breath, you cradle souls at your breast, you let the flaws unravel. Your hands speak in metaphor, they reach, they tell stories, they reach again, they want it all, and there you are, counting, counting to seven, counting all there is; hours, days, every moment squeezed in your fist, chained to your wrist bones, the universe tied by silky cords to your mask.”

In this work, Cass Dalglish interprets the cuneiform signs of Enheduanna, a powerful Sumerian ruler in 2350 BCE. "Nin-me-sar-ra" - the first signed poetry in history - begs the deity Inanna (who entered the underworld and returned) for help overcoming a usurper. Adopting a jazz aesthetic, Dalglish improvises on her translations, re-examining the cuneiform through feminist lenses. Giving fresh interpretations to the originals, these poems form rhythmic riffs - like jazz musical improvisations - that carry the reader back to the lands of ancient Iraq during the time when gods were women.

Scholarship Thank You Notes

If you receive a merit scholarship or a "named" scholarship as part of your financial aide you are required to write a thank you note to the donors of your scholarship. You should have received a flyer in your mail box and an email telling you about thank you notes.

To help you accomplish this, we have scheduled four thank you note writing sessions. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, you are invited to stop by the Christensen Center and compose thank you notes to your donors. On each of these days staff and students will be available from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to offer assistance.

These merit and "named" scholarships are supported by generous donors with the objective of making an Augsburg education more accessible for our students. Thank you notes are an important part of stewarding this important group of donors.

See you this week!

Jordan Berg is a finalist for Gagliardi Trophy

Augsburg's Jordan Berg named as finalist for Gagliardi Trophy as outstanding Division III football student-athlete

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/112608berg.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/26/08) -- Augsburg College quarterback Jordan Berg (SR, Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) was named as one of 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy as the outstanding student-athlete in NCAA Division III football, it was announced on Wednesday.

The award, named for legendary St. John's University football coach John Gagliardi, has been presented by the St. John's J-Club and Jostens, Inc., since 1993, and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and community service. It is the third time that an Augsburg football player has been a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy. In 1998, wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl won the award, and in 1997, quarterback Derrin Lamker was named as a finalist.

The award is the latest honor for Berg, who finished his three-season career at Augsburg as the top passing quarterback in school history. In his career, Berg finished with 8,777 passing yards (292.6 yards per-game) on 796-of-1,350 passing with 74 touchdowns -- all school records. Berg also holds the MIAC's career passing yardage record (conference games-only) with 7,414 yards in 24 league games.

Berg completed 297-of-499 passes for 3,226 yards and 25 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions this season, the completion total a single-season school record. Each of the other passing totals were the second-most in a single season in school history, behind his numbers from 2007. Nationally, Berg stands second among Division III quarterbacks in completions per-game (29.70), fourth in passing yardage per-game (322.60), seventh in total passing yardage (3,226), ninth in total offense yardage per-game (314.2) and 23rd in points responsible for per-game (17.00). Berg led the MIAC in passing yardage per-game and total offense in both overall (322.6, 314.2) and conference games-only (333.4, 320.6).

This week, Berg was named first-team All-MIAC, his second all-conference honor, after being named second-team All-MIAC in 2007. Earlier this month, he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team. A physics major with a 3.80 grade-point average, he was an Academic All-MIAC honoree last season, and will be named to the honor again this year when the awards are announced in the spring. He is a team co-captain.

In addition to his athletic and academic credentials, Berg has served as a volunteer at local food shelves and a volunteer coach at youth basketball camps. He took part in a mission trip to Benton Harbor, Mich., to volunteer at a local Boys and Girls Club and help refurbish and paint homes of people in need. He has volunteered for Adopt-a-Highway trash pickup efforts, as well as park cleanup for Earth Day. He has taken part in Christmas caroling with a church group at an area nursing home/Heritage House, and has worked as a volunteer teacher's assistant with elementary physical education classes.

A skilled artist, Berg has designed logos for the football team and Augsburg's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, along with painting a mural for the Augsburg football locker room and designing tattoos for both himself and his teammates. He has also restored his own Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Nominations for the Gagliardi Trophy are made by college presidents with supporting letters and credentials provided by head football coaches. After screening the nominations, the SJU J-Club Board of Directors narrows the field to 10 finalists, including at least one finalist in each of the four NCAA regions; Berg and North Central (Ill.) running back Dominic Sulo were named as finalists from the West Region. The 35-member Gagliardi Trophy national selection committee reviews the credentials, ranks the candidates 1-10 and casts their votes. Fans can also vote for their favorite players by logging onto the d3football.com web site, with the fans receiving one collective vote. Four regional winners will be named on Dec. 11.

The Gagliardi Trophy will be presented in Salem, Va., site of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (Division III national championship game), on Dec. 18. Through its commitment to college athletics and the Gagliardi Trophy, Jostens brings the award recipient and his coach to the presentation banquet.
