Cass Dalglish Reception and Book Signing

Please join us for a reading and celebration of Cass Dalglish's new book, Humming the Blues, on Tuesday, December 2, 3-4:30p.m. in the Augsburg College Bookstore. All are welcome!

"And when you squat with your weaving twisting and untwisting the threads of life, you harvest spirit, you reap breath, you cradle souls at your breast, you let the flaws unravel. Your hands speak in metaphor, they reach, they tell stories, they reach again, they want it all, and there you are, counting, counting to seven, counting all there is; hours, days, every moment squeezed in your fist, chained to your wrist bones, the universe tied by silky cords to your mask."

In this work, Cass Dalglish interprets the cuneiform signs of Enheduanna, a powerful Sumerian ruler in 2350 BCE. "Nin-me-sar-ra" - the first signed poetry in history - begs the deity Inanna (who entered the underworld and returned) for help overcoming a usurper. Adopting a jazz aesthetic, Dalglish improvises on her translations, re-examining the cuneiform through feminist lenses. Giving fresh interpretations to the originals, these poems form rhythmic riffs - like jazz musical improvisations - that carry the reader back to the lands of ancient Iraq during the time when gods were women.

Community Organizing -- Telling Your Story, Nov. 20

One of President-Elect Obama's strategies that worked so well was the concept of telling your story. All student leaders, activists, and allies are invited to a session in one of the skills needed for faith-based community organizing; I Love to Tell the Story. Stories are very powerful vehicles for transmitting moral or practical points, for revealing our moral values and for engaging others in causes important to us. But, powerful as stories are on their own, they benefit from being told in a way that increases their impact.

A public story links how you became the person you are, how the community or organization you are part of came to be, the people they are, and the challenges–choices–outcomes facing those people, that community, to achieve their goals. Intuitive as this may sound since it starts with something we are all experts on (ourselves), doing it requires training and practice to arrive at stories that are specific, are only sufficiently detailed for understanding, that tap into emotion, include challenges-choices-outcomes, offer hope and communicate our values.

Also part of the training is how to listen, how to help others hone their stories down so the story connects the dots. In this way, not only are you trained to have the stories you tell have the impact you desire, you are trained to help others achieve the same skill. Active listening and good coaching are important in this regard.

This strategy has been used successfully by Lutherans Concerned/North America in their work for full inclusion of LGBT people in the Lutheran Church. Come to train with Emily Eastwood, Executive Director of Lutherans Concerned/North America. This will be a practical workshop, where people will practice telling their story with a partner and for a group.

Come and join us on Thursday, November 20 at 5:30 in the Century Room (note room change). Email questions to murray@augsburg.edu.

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/xcountry/0809statistics/111508regional.html

GRINNELL, Iowa (11/15/08) -- The Augsburg College cross county teams were led at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday by Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.), who finished in sixth place, qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:44.4.

Haglund will compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships next Saturday (11/22) at 11 a.m. at Hanover College (Ind.). It is his first appearance in the national championships, and Augsburg's first national meet qualifier in cross country since Dan Spiess, Stephanie Simones and Rebekah Ormsby all qualified for the national meet in 1996.

The Auggie men finished in 12th place in the team standings with 299 points, an improvement of three places and more than 100 points from its finish a season ago. The Auggie women finished in 22nd place with 591 team points, an improvement of 36 points from last season.

Victor Sanchez (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) finished in 35th place with a 26:42.2 clocking, improving his finish from last season by nearly 100 places and earning All-Central Region honors along with Haglund.

Next across the line for the Auggie men was Brian Byrnes (FY, Marshall, Minn.) and Shane Wyborny (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Byrnes finished in 27:16.2, while Wyborny finished in 27:28.2, good for 67th and 74th places respectively. Wyborny cut 30 seconds off his time from the conference championships. Running well in their first NCAA regional were Ben Rodriguez (FY, Buffalo, Minn.) and Tony Fremling (FY, Brookston, Minn./AlBrook HS). Rodriguez finished in 117th place with a time of 28:42.3, while Fremling finished in 128th place, clocking a 29:03.8. Men's Soccer Advances to NCAA Playoff Sectionals!

Men's Soccer 11/16/08 -- NCAA Division III National Playoff Second Round -- Augsburg (Minn.) 1, Redlands (Calif.) 0

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/msoccer/0809statistics/111608redlands.html

REDLANDS, Calif. (11/16/08) -- D.J. Wendell (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) scored from Van Hong (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn.) on a crossing shot in the 63rd minute, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team advanced to the sectionals of the NCAA Division III national tournament with a 1-0 victory over host Redlands College (Calif.) in a second-round game on Sunday afternoon at Farquhar Field.

Augsburg (12-3-7 overall) will travel to Dubuque, Iowa to face host Loras (Iowa, 18-4-1 overall) in the sectionals on Saturday (11/22) at a time to be determined. The sectional site at Loras will also include Ohio Northern (19-5-1) and Hobart (N.Y., 18-0-3), which will meet in the other third-round game. The winners of the two third-round games will meet on Sunday (11/23) in the sectional final in Dubuque, with the winner earning a trip to the national semifinals on Dec. 5 in Greensboro, N.C.

"We keep getting better, and this is fun to be a part of. But by no means are we satisfied with where we are at. Our guys are still bitter we didn't win the conference. Now they are determined to win something bigger," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Loras will be another great team. They went undefeated last season, losing on PK's in the Final Four, and have players like Santiago Mejia and Miguel Bonilla that are extremely comfortable and the ball and dangerous in the attack. Their goalkeeper, Nate DuBois, led the country in save percentage last season and is very good at his position. It will be a challenge that we look forward to."

Augsburg, in its first-ever appearance in the national tournament, will carry a seven-game unbeaten streak (4-0-3) into the third round. Redlands (16-5-2 overall) was one of six teams to earn first-round byes in the national tournament, but saw its 17-game unbeaten streak (15-0-2) snapped by the Auggies.

"We were extremely organized in the first half, allowing them to have the ball, but not allowing them any clean looks at our goal. We needed to play low and rest as long as we could. The travel and the heat certainly took a toll on what we were capable of," Holker said. "When we started the second half, we decided to go at them -- and we were very effective, creating four high quality chances."

The Bulldogs outshot the Auggies by a 21-8 margin in the game, including a 13-3 advantage in the second half, and had six corner kicks (all in the second half) to Augsburg's two. But Augsburg goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) came up with five saves, including a save in the 74th minute and another on a header in the 86th minute. Venter claimed his ninth shutout of the season with the win and his school-record 22nd shutout of his career.

"Nick Anderson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) almost scored, but struck right into (Redland goalkeeper) Evan Hobson's chest. Then we connected on one. D.J.'s goal was one of the most attractive sequences of the season. James See (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and Van built that up, and D.J. was sharp in his finish. Van almost doubled the lead, but missed Andrew Seidel's (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) cross just outside of the right post," Holker said. "Then they came at us with everything. Redlands is a technically sound team and Bryan Fakkema was the best player we have seen all season long. They were dangerous on the counter attack and did extremely well to interchange their players in the final third. We did enough, though, to keep them in front of us. Pascaul was called on just once to make a big save, and he had the answer."
