Final Vocatio Chapel: Dr. Fardin Oliaei on April 9

The final Vocatio Chapel in the series, "Science as Vocation" will be on April 9 at 10:20 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Our guest will be Dr. Fardin Oliaei, an environmental scientist who formally worked for the MN Pollution Control Agency. This chapel will be a great match for people involved with the new Environmental Studies major.

Dr. Oliaei will share her story of working with the MPCA. In 2005, she discovered chemicals in drinking water in the east metro. She attempted to follow the chemicals to their source, but was blocked from doing further research in order to protect the business interests in the area. Eventually, she was forced to resign from the MPCA for pursuing the chemical research.

Dr. Oliaei's story highlights the dangerous relationship between ideology and science. She has been unable to find a job since she left the MPCA, which she claims is because of her insistence to focus on the chemical contamination.

Dr. Oliaei will speak in chapel on April 9 at 10:20 a.m.. A lunch with Dr. Oliaei will follow lunch for those who would like to have follow-up conversation. To RSVP for the lunch, or for more questions about the Vocatio Chapel series, please contact Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1151.

PEDALERS for PEACE Photo Documentary

Come and expand your awareness of southern social justice issues that 13 Augsburg students [The Pedalers for Peace] endeavored into over Spring Break in Louisiana. The Photo Documentary will display some of their most influential, trying and simple, fun moments.
The Pedalers invite you to share on the learning and reflection of this grassroots movement with them on Wednesday, April 9 from 12 to 2 p.m. and Thursday, April 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Christensen coffee shop.
The Pedalers will be there to openly discuss much of their enlightenment from the trip.

A CAPTION OF THE PEDALERS' SPRING BREAK:
The initial plan was simple -- 13 students, one advisor, and their bikes would travel to New Orleans and tackle the 120-mile road to Biloxi, Mississippi. The idea was to camp and volunteer along the way. But the Greyhound lady took that plan out of the realm of possibility, so we turned to Plan B.

Crunched for time and unwilling to give up, we decided to get on the bus, without our bikes, and see what New Orleans had to offer. What followed were five days that brought us to eye-level with the people of the city and their realities.

We had planned to set up tents by the St. Bernard Projects, a huge public housing development that had been flagged for demolition. As we began, New Orleans policeman promptly told us that camping there was against the law. Our host, the camping space coordinator, generously offered us the two intact rooms of his Katrina-ravaged home and backyard. The setting was shocking at first, but as we settled in and got to know our neighbors, the situation became enlightening.

On our second day, we obtained bikes from a program called RUBARB that refurbishes and sells old bikes, while also teaching children how to revitalize bikes as an alternative to more destructive hobbies.

We biked from one corner of New Orleans to another looking for people or places to help. We volunteered a few days at The Green Project, a housing supply recycling center that encouraged residents to deconstruct their homes in order to make doors, windows, railings, or bricks available for re-use. We also helped out in people's homes -- painting, pulling weeds, whatever we could do.

Picture of the St. Bernard Projects. Some of our group witnessed protests against the St. Bernard Projects demolition. We heard moving stories about the displacement and homelessness of impoverished people and the utter cold-shoulder that has been shown them by the government. During one protest, an older woman climbed over the barbed-wire topped fence to walk silently and slowly, her cane at her side, to the site where she ascended to the top of a bulldozer and succeeded in stopping the flattening for a few hours.

In the end, the trip was really about learning. Instead of Pedaling for Peace in a straight line, we found ourselves biking in circles, seeing many of the same things, places, people, and situations every day. In doing so, we learned more about the situation facing New Orleans today than we could have imagined.

Ice Out and Cold Water Danger

On warm spring days open water can look inviting to brave swimmers - but don't be fooled. Cold water can be deadly to swimmers. That's why our nonprofit is sponsoring Minnesota Cold Water Awareness Day on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Please see our web site www.coldwaterwarning.com and click on April 2008 and teach everyone, particularly youngsters, about the danger of cold water. Thanks. Ron Jacobson, Board Member.

El Salvador and Innocent Voices (movie)

El Salvador…and Innocent Voices

Come see a film about El Salvador: Innocent Voices! Showing Friday, April 4, 6-9 p.m. in Science 123. Innocent Voices (“Voces Inocentes”) is about a young boy caught up in a dramatic fight for his life as he desperately tries to avoid the war.

Background: During the 1980’s in El Salvador, Central America, the government’s armies were recruiting twelve-year-old children by kidnapping them from schools. Eleven year old Chava, if fortunate, has one year of innocence prior to being enrolled in the army and fight the government’s war against the rebels of the Farabundo Marti for the National Liberation’s army. Chava’s life turns into a game of survival, either dodging bullets or suffering from the isolation effects caused by the daily struggles. As Chava tries to find work to assist his mom financially, he experiences a love attraction toward a beautiful female classmate. All this happens as his village is transformed into a playground of games and armed confrontations.
With his mom’s love, a little transistor radio that plays anti-government hymns of love and peace (as only weapon), and with the impossible decision to join either the government’s army or the rebels…Chava finds another option.

Join us for a student-led discussion afterwards. This Friday, April 5 at 6 p.m. in Science 123!

Event Sponsored by the Spanish Department, Hispanic-Latino Student Services and the Center for Global Education. (For more information about to El Salvador call Ann Butwell at x1662 or butwell@augsburg.edu)
