Connection instructions for personal Windows and Apple computers are available at the Student Computing desk, or on the Student Computing website http://www.augsburg.edu/stucomp/wireless The web site also includes instructions about obtaining wireless access for guests.

Faculty and staff members should contact their LFC for assistance connecting their college-provided computer to the wireless network, or to obtain a guest username and password for visitors to campus.

IT staff will be available in the Christensen Center and Lindell Library from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday this week to answer questions and help you connect to the wireless network.

Subject: ATTENTION MORTENSEN RESIDENTS

Submitter:
Nina Johnson, Hall Director, Residence Life

Message: Augsburg College has contracted with HYDRAMETRICS to perform a plumbing upgrade in your building. We need to enter your apartment to conduct this work. We will be working on your kitchen and lavatory sinks, as well as your shower and toilet.

Monday, February 6th, 2006 - Friday, February 10th, in Mortensen Hall from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

We ask that you move any obstructions around (and on) the toilet tank. In addition, we will be running the showers and ask that you remove anything that you do not wish to wet. The work in each apartment will take approximately 30 minutes.

When compared with your existing sinks and shower, the new components will exhibit higher pressure and a different flow pattern. Thanks for your patience as you adapt to this new technology.

We thank you for your cooperation! ~Facilities & Residence Life

Subject: Scholarship and Beyond.....

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:
A group is working to create a signifigant series of events this spring that highlight student research, performance, and faculty scholarship at Augsburg College. Built around the foundation of the Student Research Poster Session and moving forward to include faculty scholarship, multidisciplinary performances and the arts, we will have the last word (zyzzogeton) of the academic year from April 19-22. Note those dates.
If you would like to be involved in planning of this event, please contact Diane Pike at pike@augsburg.edu OR show up in Dixie Shafer's office on Wednesday Feb 8 at 11 am. You are welcome.

Subject: Should I Take The Current or the Revised GRE?

Submitter:
Dixie Shafer, Director, Office for Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity

Message: By October 1, 2006 the GRE will change significantly (see today's A-mail detailing changes).

It's natural to ask if you should take the test before October 1 or after. Things to consider while making this decision.

1. You can go to the gre.org web site, download the PowerPrep software, take a Practice Exam and receive instantaneouly scores on your Verbal and Quantitative Sections, the two sections that are changing the most. Consider your score. If it's strong take the test now. If not, perhaps you might wait for the new administration.

2. Read the description of the changes and see if it sounds like you might do better on one test or the other. For example, the Current Verbal Reasoning Section requires a strong vocabulary. You might do better on the Revised GRE because the emphasis will be more on Reading Comprehension or vocabulary in context.

3. Don't rush to take the Current Exam unless you know your scores will be strong (see #1). All scores from the past 5 years are reported to colleges.

4. Don't decide simply to take the shorter exam (the Current GRE), but the one that you will post the highest score.

5. E-mail shafer@augsburg.edu with additional questions.

The seminar introduces the physics of sterol/phospholipid mixing in monolayer and bilayer systems as well as some techniques used to probe this mixing behavior. Results of a recent study on the miscibility phase behavior of lipid monolayers containing a variety of sterols will be presented, as well as directions for future work. Barker also coaches Team USA Minnesota, a national distance running training center based at Augsburg and the University of Minnesota.

Barker has been tremendously successful with his Team USA Minnesota runners, led by Carrie Tollefson, who competed at the 2004 Olympics in the women's 1,500-meter run. Recently, Ryan Kleimenhagen cracked the four-minute barrier in the mile run at the Boston Indoor Games.
